is it a mirror?
is it the puddle that’s gathered on an uneven street corner after a night of rain?
is it the dark glass from a storefront on the sidewalk as you walk past by?
is it every time you take a step out of an elevator and the doors close behind you?
is it every time you take a deep breath and fill your lungs with the feeling of contentment?
what is a soul, if not encapsulated by a vessel that is the body?
could you reach your hand into someone’s chest and grasp it?
could you hold it by your fingertips and move it around?
what would its shape be, and what colors would you see?
could you feel the weight of it—
or would it weigh like nothing at all?
if you come across the honor—
the privilege—
to view into one’s soul,
i hope that you don’t take it for granted—
as we can only be sure to know what it’s like
to live in this moment:
two souls in the same expanse of time,
unknown to when they’ll meet again.
